Course Summary

From September 2016, any technician aspiring to become a qualified MOT tester must complete a formal qualification via a training provider, this replaces the course formerly offered directly with the DVSA. This intensive course is a delivered over 4 days and on successful completion of the online test and practical assessment, technicians can progress to the DVSA demonstration test in order to obtain the Certificate of Competence.

Course Prerequisites

To be eligible for the MOT Testing (Class 4 and 7) course, candidates must:

  • Have a current and full UK driving licence for the vehicle class they want to test
  • Be a skilled mechanic with a minimum of 4 years’ full-time employment in the service and repair of the vehicle types to be tested. Apprentices who have been employed for four years are eligible
  • From February 1st 2026 delegates will have to provide evidence of their technical work experience that meets the DVSA  minimum of 4 years working on the vehicles to be tested criteria, this can be  obtained from the HMRC  via the Get Proof of Employment website  https://www.gov.uk/get-proof-employment-history , alternative evidence can be Payslips, Invoices, contracts, reference

    letter or email from previous employers confirming start/finish dates of employment

    REGISTRATION CLOSES 2 WEEKS  PRIOR TO THE START DATE OF THIS COURSE, IF THE ABOVE INFORMATION IS NOT RECEIVED IT MAY RESULT IN CANCELLATION OF YOUR COURSE

  • Hold a Level 3 qualification recognised by DVSA (Check your qualifications HERE)
  • Have no unspent convictions for criminal offences connected with the MOT testing scheme or the motor trade or involving acts of violence or intimidation
  • Be of ‘good repute’
